FIRE DESTROYS TWO ACRES OF OATS
Fire yesterday destroyed two acres of oats growing in a roadside paddock on the Main South road near the Islington Hotel. The property belongs to Mr Maurice Holmes. Three machines, one from headquarters, one from Sydenham and one from Sockburn and the Paparua County water tender answered the call, which was received at 4.59 p.m. At one period the fire threatened buildings, but it was contained within the oats paddock. The kitchen of a home at 16 Aylmer street was extensively damaged by fire yes-
terday. A refrigerator in the kitchen overheated and ignited. The blaze spread to the rest of the kitchen and its ceiling. The property belongs to Mr C. Robertson. One machine from Sydenham answered the call which was received at 3.10 p.m. Heat from a welding torch caused minor damage to a classroom at St. Bede's College, Main North road, yesterday afternoon. Workmen had been welding as they installed a central heating system in a single storey brick classroom block. They were working in another room when the fire was noticed. The fire had started high on one ! wall and burned through the I lining and into the ceiling. I Damage was minor. A grass fire in a vacant sec- [ tion at 4 Rossiter avenue 'about 11.27 a.m. yesterday did nc other damage. The property belongs to Mr A. GoodI man. One machine from headquarters and one from St Albans answered the call.
Another grass fire on a vacant section in Kowhai street, belonging to the State Advances Corporation, burned over half an acre. One machine from headquarters and one from Sydenham answered the call at 2.34 p.m. A herbage fire in a rubbish tin at the Riccarton Racecourse yesterday did no other damage. Two machines, one from Sockburn and one from headquarters answered the call at 4.27 p.m. A third grass fire, this time at C. W. F. Hamilton, Ltd., in Lunns road, was attended by one machine from headquarters at 4.39 p.m. The fifth grass fire of the day occurred about 4.51 p.m. on the property of Consolidated Concrete, Ltd., 762 Main South road. The fire did no other damage and one machine from headquarters answered the call. One machine from St. Albans attended the sixth
grass fire which was at Lake Bryndwr. A call to the fire was received at 4.40 p.m.
