Brilliant Tauherenikau Trials
"The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. Th* Waikato visitors. Grand Filou, from Matamata, and Chantal, from Te Awamutu, were the best trialists at Tauherenikau yesterday. Grand Filou, a Wellington Cup entrant, ran a mile and a quarter and Chantal was brilliant
with Roodyvoo over five furlongs. With the cup jockey, G. L. Willetts, up, Grand Filou ran with Blue Special over the final seven furlongs in Imin 27 3-ssec, the last three in 35sec, and was clear of his companion at the end.
Grand Filou has improved since his Pahiatua failure and both his trainer, T. Alcock, and jockey were satisfied with the trial.
Chantal (Willetts) and Roodyvoo (Walker) with the heavier weight, beat That’s It (Moroney) over five furlongs in 58sec, the last three furlongs in 34 l-ssec. Chantal was behind the others just after they started, but had joined them before the straight. Brilliant speed was the order of the day at some Wellington district tracks, but Otaki provided contrast with solid, unspectacular galloping by several hard-conditioned horses.
Galloping took place on the course proper, which was fast. Apa looked ready for another hard two-mile race when he sprinted the last five furlongs of solid work with Empire King in Imin 3 2-ssec. They ran the last half-mile in 50sec, the last three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. Apa is thriving and the Auck-land-Wellington Cup double could be within his reach. Empire King should go well in the pencarrow Hack Handicap.
Devastation ran the same distance as Apa. Apparel, waiting for him at the five furlongs, broke away ahead of Devastation, but the three-year-old caught him in little more than three furlongs. They came down the straight together, running the last five furlongs in Imin 4sec, four in 50 2-ssec and three in 38sec. Devastation will be sprinted again to sharpen him for his meeting with Prince d'Amour in the Wellington Stakes. Royal Estate worked strongly from the bottom of the straight and sprinted the last five furlongs in Imin 6 2-ssec. The last half-mile took 51sec and he finished on to run the last three furlongs in 36 3-ssec. Creolian, a prominent candidate for the Wellington Cup, and Khoringa. top-weight in the
Te Marua High-weight, galloped solidly over a mile at Trentham. Unlucky
Creolian was unlucky in the Auckland Cup, in which he finished fifth, and is in solid condition. Khoringa has been consistent in the north and even with 10-13 should race well in the Te Marua High-weight. Galloping was done on the outside of the course proper, which was fast, and on the No. 1 grass, which was also fast. Creolian (Edge) and Khoringa (Mahoney) ran from the mile and finished together. They recorded Imin 41sec for the distance and 52sec for the last half-mile. Both were going easily at the finish. Urupukapuka (Edge) ran easily from the five furlongs in 65sec, the first two in 27$sec.
Peterman (Mudford) ran easily over a mile in Imin 55sec, the last three furlongs in 41 l-ssec. He has thrived since his success at Ellerslie where he won the Great Northern Derby and the King’s Plate and should be hard to beat in the Anniversary Handicap. Wellington Cup candidates let off with easy work in the centre were Golden Defoe, Red Crest and Sobig.
Barred From Stud Book
(N.Z. Press Association) SYDNEY. The A.J.C. committee yesterday announced that progeny of mares served at the Shady Acres Stud last season will not be included in the 1966 Stud Book. The committee said that the mares had been artificially inseminated. The effect of the A.J.C. ruling is that horses born of the mares will not be eligible for classic races in Australia. The A.J.C. said the studmaster had admitted using artificial insemination, a breach of stud book rules. “It is also admitted that important station records were deliberately destroyed,” the A.J.C. reported.
