The long-awaited clash between Miss I. Press and Miss P. Kilborn, of Australia, in the women’s 80 metres hurdles was disappointing.
i Miss Press, the world re- ] cord holder, tripped and ran off at the second ] hurdle, leaving the way clear for Miss Kilborn to win by about six yards from 16-year-old Brenda Mathews, of Auckland. Miss Kilborn’s time for the distance was ll.lsec. which bettered the Southland open record held by W. M. Hayes, of Victoria, while Miss Mathews equalled the record with her time of 11.2 sec. Reiko Wins Easily The Russian middle-distance runner, R. Reiko, was unextended to win the 1500 metres from R. Hamilton, of Auckland. Reiko led for most of the journey but let J. McDonald. of Canterbury, and B. Smith, also of Canterbury, take over in the middle stages. However, he moved past them with ease on the] back straight of the final lap.!
Hamilton finished second about seven yards behind Reiko. Only about 800 attended the meeting which was held in calm but cool conditions. However, just at the end of the two-hour programme a heavy shower of rain fell. Women's Discus. —Miss T. Press (U.S.S.R.) 1, Miss E. Charteris (Canterbury) 2, Miss G. Blyth (Southland) 3.
