No Ground For Final
The Canterbury Softball Association has yet to obtain an enclosed ground for the finals of the national interclub tournament for the John Lennon trophy on March 4 and 5.
The chairman (Mr M. R. Bell) told last evening’s meeting of the executive committee that English Park had been lent to the cycling administrators and
tha( Rugby Park had been booked for athletics.
The Show Grounds were unI available and he considered | Williamson Park too narrow. Mr i Bell said. He had inspected J Queen Elizabeth Ii Park but had found the surface stoney, cracked and holding little grass. “The good areas were too small,” Mr Bell said. Miss N. Beale suggested that iDenton Park be inspected Mr Bell said that it was likely that three games would have to be played simultaneously and members agreed that Denton Park would be too narrow. Other grounds suggested were Riccarton Domain, Ensors road and Monica Park, with the first to be inspected by Mr J. Rochford regarding playing surface. If no enclosed ground is available, Edgar Mclntosh Park will be used. Fapanul Protests Two protests were received from the Papanui club regarding second grade men’s matches played before Christmas. The first concerned Papanul's 4-10 defeat by Kaiapol, The letter said both teams had been ready at the stipulated starting time but Kaiapol had claimed its IS minutes travelling dispensation.
Papanui considered this a “flaunting of the dispensation granted to Kaiapoi.” The umpires did not allow an extra 15 minutes at the end of the match, the letter said. Mrs Y. Gibson: Papanui is
late with Its protest. The game was on December 8 and the letter la dated January 11.
The secretary (Miss L. Leask) said that Papanui did not realise the protest should be sent within 48 hours after the game.
Mrs Gibson They quoted al the other rules.
One of the umpires Str A W’ltson. said that Kaiapol was one player short at the stipulated starting time It had a person prepared to play but was waiting for a regular member.
Miss N. Beale successfully moved that Papanui's protest not be received because of lateness.
The second protest, regarding Papanui's 4-7 loss to Richmond A. was referred to the protest sub-commtttee.
A complicated plav had brought confusion and the umpires had ruled that the play be replayed. Richmond had scored four runs during the replay. This protest had been posted within 48 hours. Declared Void
The women’s third grade knock-out tournament played on Saturday was declared null and void.
The winning team. Monowai A. played a second grade player who had not been regraded Mis« Leask said that th» offending player was a school girl who had played one match In the second grade.
