N.Z. Represented At U.N. Talks On Pest Control
(N.Z. Prest Atsociation) WELAANGTON, January 18. The registrar and principal technical advisor to the Agricultural Chemicals Board, on which he represents the Department of Agriculture, Mr F. B. Thompson, is representing New Zealand at the first meeting of a joint committee of the Food and Agriculture ; Organisation and the World Health Organisation on pesticide residues. Discussions are being held this week at The ■ Hague. | ■ The purpose of the com/ mittee is the elaboration of H food standards on an inter- : national basis with a view to!■
protecting consumers’ health and ensuring fair practices in the food trade. N.Z. Concern Crop damage from the drift of hormone weed-killers has caused concern in New Zealand. In England Mr Thompson will visit the Agricultural Research Council’s weed research organisation, where this problem is being studied. On his return through the United States he will discuss with authorities in Washington developments in regard to tolerances in agricultural foods and attend a national symposium on scientific aspects of pest control.
