TELEGRAPH CENTENARY
Chess Match To Re Held
The centenary of the opening of the first telegraphic line between Nelson and Christchurch will be celebrated on March 23.
The Post Office will put on a display and a telegraphic chess match will be held between the Christchurch and Nelson chess clubs. The match will commemorate a similar telegraphic chess match held a century ago between the newly-formed Christchurch Chess Club and the Neir n club.
The display will be held and the match played in the D.I.C. which will also carry' appropriate window and o’her displays. The proceedings will be opened by the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr G. Manning), who will telegraph a message to the Mayor of Nelson (Mr D. N. Strawbridge). The players at the Christchurch end will represent the Christchurch Chess Club’s successor, the Canterbury Chess Club, which this year celebrates the centenary of chess in Christchurch. Among the players will be Mr R. Lovell-Smith, who took part in a game held to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary cf the first Christchurch-Nelson game. The 1866 game was won by Christchurch and the 1916 game by Nelson. H.Q. Moved The headquarters of the New Zealand Chess Association has been moved from Dunedin to Christchurch. Officers elected by the association’s annual meeting, held in Hamilton, were:

Mr Gyles lives in Levin; all the rest are of Christchurch.
