Eight-Ton Load Falls On Road
These pre-cast concrete slabs for an exterior wall of a School of Engineering building at the University of Canterbury site at Ham formed an. eightton load which crashed to the road from the heavy transporter on which it was being carried yesterday.
i The accident occurred about 11 a.m. on the Main North j road, near Belfast. Mr T. P. Gilroy, the owner of the transporter, said that [the slabs were on their way [to Ham from Unit Concrete, Ltd., at Belfast. [ After rounding the corner | near the Belfast Hotel the driver heard something in the [ load give way. He stopped, i and the slabs, each weighing about a ton and measuring i 10ft by 6ft, crashed to the
ledge of the road from the : upright position in which thej were being carried. It was thought that the specially-constructed bolstei i in which the slabs were be ■ ing carried gave way. This caused timber support and two wire ropes which had [been holding the load in [ place to snap. The parked transporter and [the slabs on the ground had [little effect on other traffic. A mobile crane was called
and tile damaged panels were llifted back on the transporter; ; and returned to Unit Concrete, Ltd. About three-quart-ers of an hour elapsed be-1 j tween the time the slabs fell I from the transporter till they! ! had been reloaded. Telegrams To Pakistan.— The Chief Postmaster (Mr J.j W. Lincoln) advises that jurgent private telegrams are; now being admitted to! I Pakistan.
