“Must Be Kept As Quarantine Site”
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 18. The Director-General of Agriculture, Mr D. N. R. Webb, said today Somes Island in Wellington harbour was the only possible site for a maximum security quarantine station in New Zealand.
At present the department maintains a routine quarantine station on the island, but it is hoped to transfer this to Silverstream in Hutt Valley, in the near future. The Wellington City Council is interested in taking over Somes Island as a public reserve and Wellington yachtsmen have asked for the island as a base for operations. Economy a Priority "We have every sympathy with yachtsmen and others who want the island,” said Mr Webb, “but the country’s economy must take priority. “We are an agricultural country and our whole economy and prosperity depends on agriculture. Although the
decision on Somes Island is not mine, there can only be one course of action. It must be kept as a quarantine station.” Mr Webb said that New Zealand had a very good record of animal health —“and we want to keep it that way.”
