Obituary MR T. REID

Mr Thomas Reid, who died recently in Palmerston North, was known throughout New Zealand as an eminent judge of stud sheep and cattle, and had many associations with Canterbury. He was born in Scotland in 1898. and at the age of 16 he joined the Cameronians and served for three years in France and Belgium. He was gassed during the Battle of the Somme. Mr Reid migrated to New Zealand in 1920 and worked for several well-known stud breeders, including Messrs C. O. T. Rutherford. H. T. Little. R. M. Perry, and W. Morton. In World War II he served with commissioned rank for 12 months, and he was a member of the Canterbury Officers’ Club for many years. Mr Reid joined the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Ltd., in 1933, and resigned 10 years later to become stud stock manager for Dalgety and Company, Ltd., in Palmerston North. After the merger of the Dalgety and Loan companies Mr Reid continued with the new company until 1962, when he retired.

He is survived bv his wife and two children. Mrs H. McKinnon. of Otane. and Mr J. T. Reid, a former pupil of Palmerston North Boys’ High School, who won a Rhodes Scholarship in 1961 and has played Rugby for Oxford
