“The Press” In 1866
January 18 SHARK SCARE.—Yesterday a shark measuring from eight to ten feet in length was seen cruising in Lyttelton harbor. The fish was seen near the head of the Bay, afterwards within twelve yards of the Beach, close to the Government Jetty, and subsequently, at Officer’s Point. We believe that refuse from a slaughter yard at the head of the harbor has been the means of attracting a number of those uninviting visitants, and it would be well that bathers in the harbor should exercise due caution. THE RACES.—The weather yesterday
was again all that could be desired for the races . . . The amusements on the ground consisted of several “Aunt Sallies,” which were well patronised, although the same cannot be said of the boxing booth, outside of which at intervals, some of the “fancy” showed themselves, and challenged all on the ground, and finding none accepted, they very graciously condescended to pitch into one another in the inside for the amusement of the public, for the low sum of Is. Doodiem Bucks seemed to meet with but few admirers, and there was a total absence of the swindles usually to be found on the course.
