Service To Travellers

Sir, —On Monday, December 27, we went across-country to the Rangitata river-mouth. On the way home we ran out of petrol because the gauge went wrong and the journey was further than we anticipated. However, we managed to get to the Rangitata Shell pump on the main road, a few minutes after hours. After assuring the fellow that we were right out of petrol, he came out. Obviously he was annoyed because he was very rude to us and on top of it he charged us an “opening fee” of ss! On all my travels 1 have not encountered such treatment at a petrol station. Is this the way to treat tourists to this country? I suggest they sell out to people who have some manners.—Yours, VISITOR. January 6, 1966. [Mr G. H. Goodall, the service station proprietor, had no comment to make on this letter.]
