Tennis ‘Test’ To Aust.

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Although the Australian Universities’ lawn tennis team was forced to default two matches and another player was hit in the eye with a ball the side managed to win the first of its two “test” series against New Zealand Universities by 12 matches to four in Auckland today.

The Australians were forced to default a mixed doubles and a women’s doubles match when Miss S. Coote became ill after winning her singles

event, but this did not greatly affect their chances. Miss Coote, who was suffering from an inflamed throat, was confined to bed after winning her singles match against the Hamilton player Miss C. Johnston, 6-2, 6-8, 7-5, after an even struggle. The tourists’ top player, Miss A. Jenkins, was hit in the eye with a hard shot, but managed to win all three of

the matches she contested. She beat Miss A. Glenie in two sets in the singles. The other two Australian women, Miss B. Fisher and Miss J. Nelson, won all the matches they contested. It was left to the men to gain the only two New Zealand victories.

The Wellington player, J. B. Souter, came from behind and saved five match points to beat the top Australian player, G. Pollard.

Souter saved his match points when trailing 7-8 in the second set, one set down, on his own service. He won 5- 10-8, 2-6. The Auckland player, B. Young, headed P. Keller, 6-4, 6- to gain the only other win. Results (Australian names first): Men's Singles.—G. Pollard lost to J. B. Souter, 7-S; 8-10, 2-6; P. Keller lost to B. Young, 6-2, 6-4; G. Simpson beat J. Martin. 9-7, 6-1: E. Beers beat C. Ronayne, 9-7, 6-1. Women’s Singles.—Miss A. Jenkins beat Miss A. Glenie, 7-5, 6-1: Miss B. Fisher beat Miss L. Farrell, 6-4, 6-2; Mtss J. Nelsor beat Miss P. Rogan, 6-1, 6-0; Mist Cotte beat Miss C. Johnston. 6-2, 6-8, 7-5.

Men's Doubles.—Pollard and Keller beat Souter and Young, 3-6, 6-4. 6-0: Simpson and Beer beat Martin and Ronayne, 6-2, 6-3.

Women's Doubles. Misses Jenkins and Nelson beat Misses Glenie and Farrell, 6-T, 6-2: Misses Coote and Fisher lost to Misses Roan and Johnston by default.

Mixed Doubles.—Pollard and Miss Jenkins beat Souter and Miss Glenie, 6-1, 6-0; Keller and Miss Nelson beat Young and Miss Farrell, 6-1, 6-2; Simpson and Miss Coote lost to Martin and Miss Rogan by default: Beers and Miss Fisher beat Ronayne and Miss Johnston, 6-3, 6-1.
