Irish Welcome For Ambassador

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 17. Banners, Irish flags, and thick Irish brogues greeted the Irish Ambassador (Dr. Eoin Mac White) on his arrival at Wellington Airport tonight.

The Irish communities turned out in full force to give their first ambassador a warm welcome On his first visit to New Zealand. Three dozen girls dressed in the green of the Wellington Irish Society and the purple of the Hutt Valley Irish Society formed two lines underneath a banner in Gaelic reading “a . 100,000 welcomes.” The welcome was “a bit of a surprise” to Dr. Mac White, who described it as “very charming.” Dr. Mac White is the Irish Ambassador to Australia, .and his accreditation was extended to New Zealand "hree months ago. “I hope to improve the consulate services for Irish citizens in New Zealand,” he said.

At present the services are provided from Canberra. Dr. Mac White was born in 1923 in Geneva, where his father was Ireland’s permanent delegate to the League of Nations.

Dr. Mac White entered the Foreign Service in 1947, and after appointments in London, Rome, and Berne was appointed First Secretary of the Department of External Affairs in 1955. He was appointed Charge

d’Affaires at the Irish Embassy in Canberra in 1963, and in 1964 became Ambassador to Australia. Dr. Mac’ hite is married with five children.
