MELBOURNE ESCAPE
Yard Was Not Supervised (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) MELBOURNE, Jan. 17. At the moment Ronald Ryan and Peter Walker chose to escape from Pentridge Gaol on Sunday, December 19, there was no warder in the recreation yard where they were. Their only supervision for the several minutes it took them to get out of prison was a warder who couid not see them from his post in a tower on the gaol's outer wall. These details are from a report on the escape by the director of prisons, Mr E. V Shade, released today by the Chief Secretary, Mr Rylah. The officer supervising the east yard of the prison was directed to supervise both yards during the temporary absence of the west yard officer.
When he went to make an inspection of the west yard, Ryan and Walker climbed over the inner prison wall with the help of other prisoners in the east yard.
