Chequer Board Brilliant At Hutt Park

8 “The Press" Special Service WELLINGTON. The northern visitor, Chequer Board, gave further proof of his ability when he recorded an outstanding performance to win the Wallaceville Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting at Hutt Park on Saturday evening.

Chequer Board, a four-year-old bay horse by Johnny Globe out of the Lucky Jack mare, Placid Girl, is entered for the Inter-Dominion Championships in Sydney next month, but efforts by his owner, D. C. Jessop, to Obtain suitable transport have so far been unsuccessful. Jessop was formerly associated with L. F. Berkett When the latter had Highland Fling, and he also trained on his own account at Addington until a few years ago. He is now farming at Tangiteroria, near Whangarei, and trains Chequer Board there.

The Wallaceville Handicap was Chequer Board’s third success for the season. It stamped him. as a pacer of great promise. He stood on the mark at the start, and after two furlongs was a conservative 60 yards behind the main bunch. Chequer Board gradually made up the leeway, and with a round to go was only about seven lengths from the leader, but awkwardly pocketed on the inside. Going down the back for the last time Chequer Board had not improved, and his chances at this stage appeared almost hopeless. Jessop worked Chequer Board clear approaching the turn, and round the bend he appeared wide out. He unwound a brilliant final sprint which had the field covered half a furlong out. He won going away by a length and three-quarters from the smart filly, Phillmark, which led for much of the journey. Phillmark looked to have the race in safe keeping when under a good hold turning for home. She ran on well, but found Chequer Board too good. The T.A.B. double was won by the Templeton-trained pair. Flying Maiden and Trysail.

Flying Maiden went to the front after a round in the Ordeal Trotting Free-for-All and, although under pressure over the final furlong, held on to beat the faster-finishing When by a long neck. GOOD RUN

Although excuses could be found for some of the beaten horses, Flying Maiden’s performance was good. When was delayed for a run at the vital stage after enjoying a good trail until the home turn.

Scotleigh, after breaking early, was a good third ahead of the favourite, Poupette, which did not enjoy the best of runs, and Queen’s Cord, which failed to improve from fifth on the turn.

The second favourite, Trysail, scored an all-the-way win in

the second leg, the Adios Handicap. He began fast from No. 2 on the limit, and was in front by four lengths at the end of a furlong.

Turning for home his margin over the hot favourite, Buchanan, was only three-quarters of a length, but, confidently handled by J. A. Carmichael over the final stages, he won by a length and a quarter from Buchanan.

Buchanan could hardly have been in more trouble and was most unlucky. He suffered a check at the start and was again trlterfered with after a furlong and a half. He was forced over considerable extra ground to secure a challenging position and still finished determinedly to beat all but Trysail. Southern Song finished on for third with the remainder well beaten. Results;—
