CRICKET Riccarton Side Scores 269 Against Old Boys
Riccarton, with a solid century by G. T. Barrett and a brilliant innings of 64 by R. Millar, scored 269 against Old Boys when the seventh round of the senior cricket championship began on Saturday, and has set a problem which may have to be resolved by long division.
This round is the last before the competition is split into two, and if Riccarton wins on the first innings, which seems likely, the two teams would have 50 points—not taking the game’s bonus points into consideration—and be fourth equal, for WestUniversity is in an excellent position to take full points from Old Collegians and move from fifth to third. So the bonus points for the first-innings scoring rates could be the decisive factor: at present Old Boys has the faster rate.
Barrett’s century, his first this season, was the major personal achievement, but I. R. Hartland, who bowls only occasionally for Sydenham, won the distinction of a hattrick, and J. W. Kiddey capped a remarkable senior career by reaching a personal aggregate of 500 wickets. Scores:— Old Collegians 139 and 4 for no wicket; West Christchurch • University 192 for nine wickets declared. Lancaster Park 205; St Albans 107 for two wickets. Riccarton 269; Old Boys 100 for three wickets.
East Christchurch-Shir-ley 140 and 9 for no wicket; Sydenham 145 for nine wickets declared. Half-centuries were made
by B. F. Hastings and B. Nottage (West-University), R. T. Dowker (Lancaster Park) and Miller. For Old Boys M. L. Ryan took five wickets.
