NEW PLYMOUTH SWIMMING
Miss M. Macrae Dominant (N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH. Miss M. Macrae (Auckland) was clearly superior in the two women’s backstroke events, but there was Mttle between the four men freestyle swimmers at the premier swimming carnival at New Plymouth on Saturday. Miss Macrae led throughout in both the 110 yards and 220 yards backstroke, and finished several yards clear of Otago’s Miiss C. Mitchell.
The young Taranaki swimmer, Miss R. McCullum, swimming by invitation, finished third ahead of Mdss J. Halsey (Canterbury) in the 220 yards event. In the men’s 110 yards freestyle, G. Campbell (Waikato) and G. Smith (Auckland), swam stroke for stroke throughout the race with Campbell! winning by a touch. Both recorded 59.8 sec.
Mr J. A. Donaldson (Christchurch), one of the three New Zealand swimming selectors, watched the programme. Results of the premier events were:—
Men’s 100 Yards Freestyle.— G. Campbell (Waikato) 1, G. Smith (Auckland) 2, D. Henderson (Wellington) 3. 4.59.8. Men’s 220 Yard's Freestyle.—D. Henderson 1, G. Dempsey 2, G. Smith 3. 2:12.6. Women’s 110 Yards Backstroke —M. Macrae 1, C. Mitchell 2, J. Halsey 3. 1:16.4. Women’s 220 Yards Backstroke. —M. Macrae (Auckland) 1, C. Mitchell (Otago) 2, R. McCullum (Taranaki) 3, J. Halsey (Canterbury) 4. 2:40.9.
