CONFIDENT START
Wales Beats England (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright > LONDON, Wales, the reigning champions, made a confident start in this year’s five-nation Rugby Union international champion ship when it beat England 11-6, at Twickenham on Saturday. It was Wales’s first victory over England at Twickenham for 10 years. The two teams were level 3-3 at half-time after an opening half in which open moves were rare. Price broke the deadlock in the second half by kicking his second penalty goal to put Wales 6-3 ahead. This was the signal for an all-out assault by the Welsh, who were spurred on by a large contingent of supporters among the 70,000 crowd England seemed to have weathered the storm when K. Jones scythed through the home defence and after a 40yard run his pass enabled Pask to score easily. Price converted and Wales was 11-3 ahead. Perry reduced the arrears with a last-minute try. In the other championship match at Edinburgh, France was lucky to escape with a 3-3 draw in its match agadnst Scotland. Scotland, last in last season's championship, threatened to swamp the French, but the visitors’ backs played heroically and siaved their side from defeat. Results:
England 6, Wales 11; Scotland 3, France 3; Ireland, internatinal trial final, Whites, 30 Blues 6 (at Dublin).
