Hydroplanes Find Pace Too Fast
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Only three of the seven entries finished in the New Zealand open hydroplane championship on the Tamaki estuary yesterday.
G. Sullivan, a Ngaruawahia cartage contractor, regained the national title and the Masport Cup, which he had held two years ago, with a spectacular display in his Ford-powered Miss Horotiu. He was followed home by Medea, driven by J. Nicholson, and Slipray II (E. Baynton). The pace was fast early
and speeds of 110 to 120 miles an hour were reached. But even the winner, who was timed at Umin 43.35ec for the seven-lap race, dropped speed before the final lap to rest his engine. J. Kelly, of Hamilton, won the 180 cubic inch V-bottom national championship in his Daimler Dart-powered Rapido. Aged 58, he has only had one year’s boating experience.
