Hot-Day Tuning Gave Aust. Margin
Australia won the first 1966 go-kart international against New Zealand, 379-307, yesterday, but its superiority was increased by a greater familiarity with the problems of tuning karts on hot days.
The Australian karts used pure alchohol which kept their engines a good deal cooler than the New Zealanders’. Australians took the first three places in both 100 c.c. and 200 c.c. events, four heats to* each event. Places were:—
100 c.c.—R. Cooper (Victoria) 1, W. Mudge (New
South Wales) 2, N. Watts (New South Wales) 3. 200 c.c.—J. Savage (New South Wales) 1, P. Stebbings (New South Wales) 2, M. Findlay (South Australia) 3. Savage’s win was almost his last of the series as he tossed a cigarette butt out of his car window on his way back from the track and it caught in his trailer. His trailer was a sheet of flames but he managed to rescue the kart from it. Results were:— 100 c.c.—Heat 1: New Zealand 53 points, Australia 49. Heat 2: Australia 53, New Zealand 49. Heat 3: Australia 56, New Zealand 46. Heat 4: Australia 54, Nelson 30. Total: Australia 212, New Zealand 178.
200 c.c.—Heat 1: Australia 41, New Zealand 31. Heat 2: Australia 43, New Zealand 32. Heat 3: Australia 40, New Zealand 32. Heat 4: Australia 43, New Zealand 34. Total: Australia 167, New Zealand 129.
