BREZHNEV SAYS U.S. WAY OPEN
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) MOSCOW, January 16. The Soviet Communist Party leader, Leonid Brezhnev, said today that American leaders should recognise the “justness of the Vietnamese people’s demands” if they want to end the war in Vietnam.
Mr Brezhnev, speaking in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator, made the first public reference of a Soviet leader to President Johnson’s peace campaign, even though this was indirect.
“The American imperialists, being aware of the hopelessness of their venture (in Vietnam), are trying to manoeuvre,” Mr Brezhnev said,
according to the official Soviet news agency, Tass. "While extending their aggression, they profess at the same time a desire for peace talks. “If the American leaders actually want an end to the war in Vietnam,” Mr Brezhnev added, “then who prevents them from recognising the justness of the Vietnamese people’s demands and thus opening the . oad to peace?” Mr Brezhnev said Soviet concern was not limited to United States action in Vietnam but included other events in Asia.
