43 SAVED AT PIHA

Dangerous Surf (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 16. Piha life-savers had to carry 43 people in difficulties in the surf to safety when a rip made conditions at the beach dangerous this afternoon.

The glorious weather attracted hundreds of swimmers and paddle-board riders to Piha. The crowd spread out along the beach and neither warnings, beach flags nor the sight of others in trouble could deter visitors from swimming in dangerous places. From noon until 5.30 p.m. the 25-man surf life-saving patrol was kept busy saving people in difficulties. Ten swimmers and 33 paddle-board riders were dragged from the surf.

The Piha Surf Club captain, Mr B. Sullivan, said he thought the number of rescues was a record.

“It was the busiest day we have had. At one stage six were sucked into the rip in about 10 seconds and others still kept doing the same thing. We didn’t rest alk day."
