West Australian Polo Side Beaten
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA. A travel-weary West Australian polo team was defeated by Poverty Bay by 4 goals to 2, at the Bushmere ground yesterday, in the opening match of its New Zealand tour.
The weather was ideal and the match was watched by about 1000 people. In spite of their tiredness the tourists beat Poverty Bay Juniors in a curtainraiser by three goals to nil, and treated the crowd to an exhilarating display in the clash with the senior team. The tourists, G. Fisher (captain), N. Richardson, 1. Bain and D. Reid, flew from Perth at 6 a.m. on Thursday and landed at Auckland at 1 a.m. on Friday. They travel-
led, by road to Gisborne on Saturday. The match against the juniors put the Australians on their mettle and they shocked the seniors in the main match by scoring a goal in the first seconds of the opening chukka.
The home side retaliated in the second chukka scoring two goals, the tourists equalising in the third. The fourth and fifth chukka produced some of the best polo of the match, with Poverty Bay gradually assuming the upper hand against the tiring West Australians, scoring a goal in each chukka.
Reid was thrown and badly shaken when his horse fell in the fifth chukka. He retired, his place being taken for the rest of the chukka by D. Kemp, a Poverty Bay junior. Reid recovered well and was back in action in the sixth chukka.
The Poverty Bay team was led by the international, W. Sherrat, with the brothers J. and I. Kirkpatrick and S. Mathews.
Scorers for Poverty Bay were J. Kirkpatrick (2), W. Sherrat, and I. Kirkpatrick. For West Australia L. Bain scored both goals.
