Active Again After being silent for more than 30 years, a geyser at Tokaanu erupted to a height of 35 to 40 feet at 8.30 a.m. yesterday. The geyser continued to play throughout the day at intervals of an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half. It ceased in 1906 but began again after the Napier earthquake in 1931. About 18 months later an earth tremor stopped it again, and it had not played between then and yesterday.—(P.A.) Dull Weather Christchurch had dull weather yesterday and light rain early in the evening. At 6 am. the temperature at Harewood was 53 degrees, and at 9 am. 58 degrees. It reached a maximum of 62 degrees at noon. At 3 p.m., when the temperature at the airport was 61 degrees, the temperature at the Botanic Gardens was 63 degrees. The wind was light and variable until 10 a.m., when it changed to a fresh southerly, and there were a few isolated showers. At 4.15 p.m. the temperature gauge on the Government Life building showed 61 degrees.

Conscientious A young man who gave £5 to the Christmas appeal of the National Council of Churches in Christchurch this week was at first unwilling to explain his generosity. But when pressed he told a staff member: “I got paid for a job and I didn't think it was worth what I was paid.” So far £7185 17s 3d has been raised in the appeal. Rare Coin A 1662 silver English crown, believed to be the only one in New Zealand, is at present on display in the North Otago Pioneer Gallery. It is one of the first coins minted in England after King Charles II made an order in 1662 changing the system of striking coins from hammering to minting.—(P.A.)
