MT. ETNA ERUPTS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) CATANIA (Sicily), January 13. Mt. Etna exploded into violent volcanic activity yesterday after almost two years of only minor eruptions. A rumble like distant artillery fire awakened residents of the scores of orchard and vineyard villages on the slopes of the 10,705-foot volcano. The explosions fired tons of molten rock 200 yards into the air from the subterminal crater on the north-east slope, below the great central cone of Europe’s tallest volcano. There was no immediate sign of any major lava flow down towards the croplands and villages below. The explosion was attributed by experts of the Etna Volcanic Observatory to a gradual build-up of lava within the throat of the great cone.
About 30 explosions a minute were counted and the central crater sent up clouds of vapour.
