Penalty On Tardy Importers Urged
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 13. The Auckland port should be worked over Christmas and New Year and a penal charge should be made against importers who caused congestion by leaving cargo on the wharf, the freight Manager for L. D. Nathan and Company, Mr V. Baylis, said today.
He said the loss of earning power and overhead costs while ships were anchored in the stream would cost their owners about £lOOO a day. A representative of another shipping firm set the figure at £5OO. Sixteen freighters arriving at Auckland so far this year have waited in the stream for berths. The day of greatest congestion was Tuesday, when nine ships were in the stream. Today three ships were waiting.
Ships in the stream have been supplied by launch with fresh bread, milk and vegetables to tide them over until they berth and take on stores. The crew of the Cap Colorado, which has been anchored since January 7, have been fetching their own provisions as a lifeboat drill.
The harbourmaster, Captain J. A. Thode, said today that the congestion should be over by Saturday.
