Growth Problems Still Facing Government
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 14. New Zealand had yet to solve all of the problems of maintaining growth with price stability in its fullemployment economy, the Minister in Charge of the Department of Statistics (Mr Lake) said today. “Even if the domestic causes of price rises could be removed. New Zealand could not readily be isolated from world price trends,” the Minister said. Rising price levels were a world-wide phenomenon which most advanced countries had yet to solve. Government was trying to get the co-operation of the unions in an incomes and prices policy which it hoped would achieve growth with price stability. “The outcome of these efforts is being watched with interest,” said Mr Lake. “The basic fact remains, however, that New Zealanders can look with satisfaction at a record of consistent rises in prosperity based on sound economic growth in both our agricultural and manufacturing industries.” The Government was determined to maintain this record by continued adherence to its policies.
