SAWMILL BLAZE

Equipment Destroyed

Firemen from the Ashburton Volunteer Fire Brigade last night saved the factory of Ashburton Sawmills, Ltd., in Leeston street, Ashburton, from a fire Which broke out in a shed on the property at 10.35 p.m. A 44-gallon drum of petrol exploded and crashed through the roof of the shed. It landed 50 yards away, narrowly missing some bystanders. It is believed that the fire started in some kapok in the shed. Several tractor tyres and electrical equipment had been destroyed when the brigade arrived.

Singed paintwork was the only damage suffered by two trucks parked near the fire. Two oxygen bottles near the fire did not explode.

The timber mill itself and a nearby stack of timber escaped damage.
