Setback For Russia At Havana Talks
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) HAVANA, January 14. China has outmanoeuvred Russia and the United Arab Republic at the tri-continental solidarity conference in Havana.
China wanted Havana as the headquarters of the new tri-continental body, which some delegations wanted to replace the African and Asian People’s Solidarity Organisation. Havana, not Cairo as suggested by the United Arab
Republic and Russia, has been chosen.
China also opposed the new body superceding the organisation and got her way. Conference sources said today that China got her way through an improbable marriage of conflicting forces within the conference without winning a direct victory over Russia. Although Russia suffered a temporary setback, the United Arab Republic which held out for Cairo as the new body’s site, received an outright defeat.
