Larrikinism At The Mount

(N.Z. Press Association) TAURANGA, Jan. 13. “Some years ago there was a tendency for people from other parts of the country to converge on the Tauranga-Mount Maunganui area and make a nuisance of themselves,” said Mr G. J. Donne, S.M., today when he sentenced two youths on charges arising from a New Year’s Eve disturbance at the Mount.

“Because of efficient and sensible police action and sentences of some severity from this Court, the troublemakers became disinclined to visit us again,” he said. “For three years people and visitors to this area were able to enjoy its advantages without the disturbances of larrikins, louts and fools. “This year, for an incomprehensible reason, the louts seemed to have convened at the Mount and chosen to upset, disturb and wreck what was a traditional enjoyable and happy way of celebrat’ -g New Year’s Eve." He said that in the public interest he must make certain that disturbances on New Year’s Eve were curbed. Rodney Harrison, aged r t labourer, of Wanganui, who was appearing for sentence after pleading guilty to a charge of disorderly behaviour ,was fined £4O and Paul Dalton Lindsay, aged 21, a

driver, of Upper Hutt, was fined £2O after pleading guilty to a charge of obstructing the police. Both youths were placed under the superivsion of the probation officer for three months.

Larry Donald Ramsay, aged 17, an apprentice mechanic, of Kawerau, who appeared for sentence after pleading guilty

to a charge of disorderly behaviour was remanded until January 20 for a probation report. A fine of £lO was imposed on Ernest William James Baker, aged 22, a fitter and turner, of Mt. Maunganui, when he was convicted on a charge of disorderly behaviour.

Baker was said to have objected to a constable going to the rescue of another constable. Baker was also convicted of causing wilful damage to the office wall at the Mt. Maunganui police station and ordered to make restitution of £5. Two brothers were convicted and remanded until January 20 on bail for sentence. Roger Noel Barlow, aged 21, a millhand, of Tauranga, pleaded not guilty to charges of disorderly behaviour and wilfully damaging a sign, and Peter William Barlow aged 20, a timber worker, pleaded guilty to charges of disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest.
