Record Entry For Junior Tennis
The largest entry for any tournament in New Zealand tennis history, 400, has been attracted to the Canterbury junior championships, due to begin on January 18 at Wilding Park.
These championships will be immediately followed by the New Zealand under-15 and under-17 championships, beginning on January 24. and have drawn players from Northland to Southland, and also an Australian team of 30 representing every State. Heading the seeding list for the under-17 boys is D. A. Parun (Wellington), a member of the Wellington Slazenger Shield team and a brother of the New Zealand junior representative. However, the under-17 and under-15 girls’ events seem likely to be the most closely contested.
Miss J. Bishop (Christchurch), runner-up in the New Zealand under-17 championship in 1965, heads the list for the under-17 girls, but two exceptionally promising girls from Auckland,
Misses G. Smith and C. Bray, have been seeded second and third. Miss M. Pryde (Wellington) heads the under-15 seeds at the age of 13. She proved an outstanding junior player when she defeated Miss Bishop, 6-1, 6-2, in the Wilson Cup trials. ■ The seedings are: Boys' Under 17.—D. A. Parun <Uel lington) 1, M.
