FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT Situation.—An anti-cyclone in the north Tasman Sea is moving slowly north-east and is losing intensity. A cold front is advancing from the central Tasman Sea on to the southeast of the South Island. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Freshening north-easterlies about the coast and north-westerlies inland; cloud increasing, with rain developing in the Alps; a change to cool south-westerlies with showers is expected in the south in the afternoon, spreading to northern areas later. Outlook : Partly cloudy.

Marlborough.—North to north-westerly winds becoming fresh in exposed places later; cloud increasing during the day with some rain likely in the late evening; moderate temperatures, but a change to cool south-wester-lies is likely on the Kaikoura coast late in the day. Outlbok: Scattered showers clearing during the morning.

Nelson. —Moderate variable winds; cloud increasing, with rain developing in the western ranges in the afternoon and spreading to other areas later; mild day temperatures. Outlook: Scattered showers, clearing during the morning.

Buller and Westland. —Moderate variable winds; rain in the south, spreading to other areas later in the day; moderate temperatures. Outlook: Cloudy.
