The Road Toll
Sir,—l wish to congratulate the motoring public on the improving standard of driving over the years. In 1928 there were 176 road deaths and 178,400 vehicles registered, or 0.99 deaths a 1000 motor vehicles. In 1949 there were 218 road deaths and 387,000 registered motor vehicles, or 0.56 deaths a 1000: and in 1965 there were 561 deaths and 1,152.000 vehicles registered, or 0.49 deaths a 1000. More significantly, in the years 1925 to 1931 inclusive, the average was 0.97 deaths a 1000 registered motor vehicles per annum: from 1946 to 1950, 0.58 deaths a 1000 vehicles, and from 1961 to 1965, 0.43 deaths a 1000 vehicles per annum. If road deaths are correlated with petrol consumption a similar trend is found.—Yours, etc., J. H. LIVESEY. January 11, 1966.
