GO-KARTERS’ £500 BOND
Refund Today
By Customs
In Christchurch today, the Customs Department will refund £5OO to a party of Australian go-karters.
| Last Tuesday the department ordered the go-karters to produce the money as a bond after the Director of Customs Revenue (Mr J. H. Randal) ruled that go-karts were motor vehicles. However, the acting Collector of Customs in Christchurch (Mr J. Raleigh) said yesterday that the Go-Kart Federation.had agreed to take over the surety that the imported go-karts would not be sold in New Zealand.
Mr Raleigh said the visitors had been ordered to pay the bond, which would cover duty and sales tax if they sold their machines in New Zealand. The national organiser of the federation, Mrs A. J. Johnathan, of Christchurch, had negotiated the matter with the Customs Department.
