Mild Day The weather in Christchurch yesterday was mainly fine and sunny, with mild temperatures. The maximum temperature at the weather office at Harewood was 62 degrees at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. A light southerly wind blew in the morning but changed to a moderate easterly in the afternoon. The temperature at Harewood at 6 a.m. was 52 degrees and it rose to 54 degrees at 9 a.m. At noon the temperature was 60 degrees and after the maximum 62 degrees at 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. it dropped to 61 degrees at 3 p.m. and to 60 degrees at 4 p.m. The temperature in the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. was 62 degrees, and the Government Life Building temperature gauge recorded the same temperature at 4.30 i p.m. Big Absenteeism When Lane, Walker, Rudkin, Ltd., reopened yesterday after the Christmas holidays, 20 per cent to 25 per cent of the female workers were ab-1 sent. This represented about i 160 women, out of the fac-1 tory’s normal female staff of i 800, said a company spokes-i man. Smoother Ride Wellington Free Ambulance headquarters has received its first “soft ride” ambulance. It is the first of three replacement ambulances which will arrive within the next few months.
