‘RHODESIA UNITED’
New Claim By Smith (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) SALISBURY, January 12. Rhodesia had not been weakened but united by the problems now facing it, the rebel Premier, Mr lan Smith, said. He also warned Commonwealth leaders gathering in Lagos that unless their deliberations were constructive they would be playing into the hands of the Communists. They might help to create another “Vietnam in Africa,” he said. Mr Smith said: “If I had a message to send to the Prime Minister of Nigeria and his colleagues from other Commonwealth countries it is simply this—l would like to assure them that the stand we have taken in Rhodesia is not a stand against any member of the Commonwealth or against the ideals upheld by the Commonwealth, but is purely and simply a stand against communism.”
