DENIALS IN S. AFRICA

Mercenaries For Vietnam (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) JOHANNESBURG, Jan. 12. Both the United States Embassy in Pretoria and the head recruiting office in Johannesburg for Congolese mercenaries have denied that they were enlisting white South African mercenaries to fight in South Vietnam. A spokesman at the recruiting office described the reports as “a load of nonsense,” adding “In this office we have knowledge of the whereabouts of every South African recruited to fight in the Congo.” A spokesman at the United States Embassy said: “The United States Army is not recruiting troops in the Congo. We would have been informed if any South Africans had been signed up to fight in Vietnam.”
