AUSTRALIAN CUP
132 Entries Received (N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) MELBOURNE. The Victoria Racing Club has received an entry of 132 horses for the £N.Z.9720 Australian Cup (10 furlongs) at Flemington on March 14. Many leading New Zealand horses are among first nominations for the race, part of Melbourne’s autumn carnival. They include the former weight-for-age champion Sir Dane, the former top New Zealand money winner, Empyreus, the Melbourne Cup winner Light Fingers, Rio and the promising stayers Boodle and Golden Defoe.
Last year’s Australian Cup winner, Craftsman, has again been nominated, as well as the champion sprinter Samson, Star Affair, Red William, Heroic Stone and Yangtze. Boodle, a four-year-old by Le Filou out of Timous, has shown considerable promise in New Zealand and is likely to make his Australian debut at the carnival.
Sir Dane, Rio and the promising two-year-old filly Risque have been nominated for the six furlong Newmarket Handicap on March 12, and the New Zealanders Mission, Argentina and Peterman for the St. Leger Stakes over a mile and three-quarters on the same day. New Zealand entries in the two-mile Duke of Norfolk Stakes on March 19 include Sir Martin, Boodle, Mission. Key Money, Teflon, Rio and Empyreus.
