Peterman May Be A Dollar-Earner
The Great Northern Derby winner, Peterman, may be a dollar-earner for his Waikato owner, Mr F. C. Johnstone, before his three-year-old racing is over.
Peterman, one of the finds of the season, has been nominated for rich races at the Victoria Racing Club’, .mtumn meeting in March. The autumn carnival at Flemington begins a month after decimal currency is introduced in Australia. As from February 19 owners racing horses at metropolitan meetings in Australia will be thinking in terms of dollars. If he makes the trip Peterman will run in the V.R.C. St. Leger Stakes on March 12, the first day of the meeting. This is run over a mile and three-quarters for 20.000 dollars. Trentham Plans More immediate plans for Peterman are for a campaign at Trentham with the Wellington Derby his main mission.
If the trip to Melbourne comes off Peterman n-y be accompanied by Golden Defoe the runner-up in the Auckland Cup, and the four-year-old Boodle, another winner in the Johnstone colours. Golden Defoe has been entered for the Australian Cup, worth 24.000 dollars, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes,
worth 16,300 dollars, and Queen’s Plate, worth 5000 dollars.
The Australian Cup, once a staying marathon, is now run over a mile and a quarter and is contested on Monday, March 14. Boodle may be tried at two miles in the Duke of Norfolk Stakes, worth 17,300 dollars, five days later. Entries for these races closed on Tuesday.
