Go-Kart Owners Had To Post Bonds
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, January 12. A go-kart is a motor-vehicle in the opinion of the Customs Department.
The Director of Customs Revenue (Mr J. H. Randle) said today that 20 Australian gokarters had to produce £5OO
in bond money for their machines on Tuesday. The Customs Department had made it clear that all motor-vehicles brought into the country by visitors were subject to bond. The bond is to ensure that the machines are not sold in New Zealand
Mr Randle said go-karts were regarded as motor vehicles rather than as items of sports equipment. However, he said, the matter was by no means closed. He understood the Collector of Customs at Christchurch would meet the New Zealand Go-kart Federation to come to some arrangement over the bond.
He hoped a system similar to that used by the organisers of the New Zealand Grand Prix could be arranged. Under this system the organisers of the race provide a guarantee that visiting racing cars will not be sold in the country.
