Romney Sold At Mastertoil "The Press" Special Service MASTERTON, January 12. The third highest price for a Romney ram at auction in New Zealand 5000gns. was paid at the Wairarapa slud sheepbreed ers’ annual fair at Masterton today. The ram. sold on account of (he Aries Stud. Masterton. wa* bought by J G. Alexander, of Wanganui, and R. W. Matthews, of Featherston, in partnership. Twelve rams from the Aries Stud averaged 931gns. The stud also obtained the second and third highest prices of the day —l9oogns to W. R. Hunt. of Wanganui, and LiOOgns to L
Duncan, of Hastings. From a catalogue of 100 Rom neys. 563 were sold al an aver age price of 430 gns compared with an average of 25Sgns tor rams last year Buyers from all parts of New Zealand attended the sale and South Island buyers were active although (hey did not lake any of the top price sheep. Top-quality sheep were in demand throughout the sale. Buy ers were selective but the demand for medium-quality sheep gave the sale a buoyant note. The small catalogue of Southdowns preceding the Romneys met a lukewarm reception. Of the 14 offered only four were sold at an average price of 66Jgns.
