N.Z. Swimmers Set Record
(N.Z.P.A. Reuter—Copyright) MELBOURNE. New Zealand’s swimmers had one success and some near misses in the Victorian championships at Melbourne.
The team of R. Walker, P. O’Carroll, G. Ruzio-Saban and I. Johnstone won the men’s open 400 metres medley relay.
Their time of 4min 28.7 sec beat the Victorian record of 4min 29.8 sec. Walker, of Wellington, was fifth in the final of the men's 200 metres freestyle. His time was 2min B.3sec. The winner, W. Blanchard, of Melbourne, recorded 2min 6.3 sec. Miss A. McMillan, of Canterbury, was second in the final of the women’s open 200 metres freestyle, with a time of 2min 23.8 sec. The winner was the titleholder, Miss M. Smith, of Melbourne, in 2min 20.7 sec. Third was the 18-year-old French girl, Miss C. Grojean, in 2min 30.6 sec. O’Carroll, of Auckland, was second in the final of the men's 100 metres open backstroke. He led until the last 15 yards and his time of 65sec broke the previous Victorian record of 66.35ec. The winner was L. Clark, of Melbourne, in 64.55ec. N.Z. Third, Fourth In the men’s open 200 metres breaststroke, RuzioSaban, of Auckland, was third in 2min 44.45ec and Johnstone, of Otago, was fourth in 2min 45.25ec. Johnstone was lying second for most of the race and was passed by Ruzio-Saban in the last 15 yards. The winner was G. Szylland, of Melbourne, in 2min 43.8 sec, with the Olympic Games representative, P. Tonkin, of Melbourne, second, also in 2min 43.8 sec.
