O’Hagen Had Fastest Finish
A three-mile race which, in the manner of many distance races, pursued a very somnolent course for most of the distance, sprang to life over the last half-mile when track-cycling resumed at English Park last evening.
The riders seemed intent on only finishing until, at the ) completion of the tenth lap, IM. Woolford made a I tremendous breakaway, and at the bell led K. Campion by 30 yards. But Woolford had no reserves and the men sitting near the back, G. Moore, A. O’Hagen, and K. Jeffery, swept past on the top bend, O’Hagen coming through the middle to win narrowly. In his first appearance on the track this season, the national road champion, T. J. Tabak (Avon), failed to qualify in the open quartermile. After leading most of the way in the sprint, he was beaten in a close finish by A. Leppens and R. Mann. However, Tabak made amends in the Italian pursuit when, as anchor-man for the B team, he withstood a storming assault by J. Cleary to win for his team by the
[narrow margin of two-tenths of a second. A feature of the evening was the continued success of the novice rider, A. Paviell, in the 500 metres sprint challenge. Unbeaten in the event this summer, this youthful competitor again displayed his native cunning as he led B. Shaw sleepily round the track before breaking with startling swiftness and gaining a lead of three or four lengths for another easy win. Although challenged in the later stages by S. Hudson, Paviell was also too strong and consistent in the IJ-mile points race and took the final lap—and double points—in convincing style to win by a point.
