Rare Talent Of Korean

Tong 11 Han, who played his first London recital last month, was described by ‘The Times” as one of the few having the potentialities of a Carreno or Horowitz. Born in North Korea in 1941, Tong was discovered as a refugee in Seoul by General Anderson, whose Fifth Air Force Division provided funds for his studies in the United States.

Because there is practically nothing that he cannot do at the keyboard, he has two temptations to fight: finding too much exhilaration in speed and in allowing great rich climaxes to sound steelhued. That apart, he has superb virtuosity and musical imagination, and the discretion of someone twice as old.

SEASON OPENS The Florence opera season opened with a performance of “Le nozzie di Figaro” conducted by Vittorio Gui, who recently turned 80.
