Education Of Country Children

Sir.—The article on private schools ("The Press,” January 6) did not mention that private secondary schools are boarding schools. The state is at present helping to support these schools by the boarding allowance scheme. It also provides a school bus service and a car allowance if required, and provides country high schools. Country parents unwilling to put their child’s name down for a private single-sex boarding school have a poor alternative in the present secondary departments. Private schools are well endowed, and provide frills such as mountain lodges, good though they may be. Many country parents feel the first call on state funds

at present, should be for firstclass country high schools. It is a pity there is not more co-operation between the State and private schools so that first preference could be given (name down or not) to all isolated children, who have been on correspondence. —Yours, etc., E. H. January 10, 1966.
