Spending On Gambling
Sir, —If a papulation of 2| million can afford to spend up to £63 million on gambling in one year out cannot afford to increase the income of its senior citizens and is only able to find £36.9 million for defence, it is surely asking for trouble in very large helpings. Whether we have a defence commitment at our back door or not, we cannot afford to go on indefinitely squandering millions on gambling and expect to remain a progressive nation. Distasteful as it may be, this wanton waste on gambling will have to be checked for the sake of the population as a whole. Excessive gambling leads to a lowering of a country’s moral standards and an ever-increasing crime rate.—Yours, etc., F.W.P.F. January 11, 1966.
