Romney Rams In Strong Demand At Feilding

FEILDING. January 10. For the first time in five years Romney rams were bought for export from the sale ring at the annual Feilding stud ram fair. Acting on behalf of an Argentine buyer, Wright, Stephenson and Company bought six medium-priced rams at auction at prices ranging from 300gns to 9OOgns. The sale held a strong note throughout and there was a sound demand for medium quality rams as well as for the best. The sale grossed 70,105gns for the 161 rams sold at auction out of 226 offered, and these averaged 435Jgns. In the first run 117 averaged 442gns. Top price of 370Ogns was
paid for a Rahere rant from S. B. Shannon, Feilding. It was bought by R. W. I Matthews and Son. Waiorongomai, and J. G. Donald and Son, Alloa. Second top price was 2800 guineas for a ram from the Bankhead Stud of Brown Bros., Feilding. The purchasers were a syndicate comprising H. B. Johnston, W. E. Warburton, and A. K. Spilman of the same district. The usual big consignment of 40 Bankhead rams from Brown Bros, attracted keen ; competition, and averaged . nearly 777igns. Their top 1 price was 2800gns. . ' Raymond Oakley (Ashburton) sold two Rinautrie rams ■ at llOOgns to F. W. Allan and 400gns to J. A. Brown, both of Ashburton, to average , 750gns for two out of four i offered. One was passed at 450gns. Robert Fraser (Timaru) averaged 279gns with four, and had two sales at 370gns. F. H. Chittock, of the Rose
Stud, Lincoln, had sales at 250gns (twice) and 225gns. With sales at auction at 550gns and 325gns, the Lea Avon Stud Company, of Darfield, averaged 437Jgns for two out of four offered. Ivan R. Oakley (Mayfield) averaged 385gns for two Tresco entries, which were sold at 300gns to A. M. Barwell (Ashburton), and 470gns to A. J. Fleming (Rotorua). T. H. Esler (Pleasant Point) sold two Silverhi’l rams at 400gns to F. C. Johnstone (Raglan) and 160gns to G. W. Belton (Maxwell). J. D. Marr (Methven) bought two Bankhead rams from Brown Bros, at 320gns and 500gns, and another Bankhead ram was bought at the latter figure by F. H. Chittock, of Lincoln. A Totaranui ram from L. N. Hoggard was bought by G. Woolley (Ashburton) and one from the Totaranui Land Company was sold at 250gns to A. Sloss (Omihi). Gavin S. Marshall (Ashburton) sold one of four offered at 60gns. Other Bankhead rams sold as follows: 2000 guineas, M. Allen and W. D. Irwin (Invercargill); 1800 guineas, Arthur Southey and E. Booth (Masterton); 1700 guineas, J. N. Brenthell and Sons (Gore); 1700 guineas, Alfred Southey (Masterton).
