Vaikvee Prevents Marlborough’s Bid

PALMERSTON NORTH. Manawatu retained the Hawke Cup with an innings and 50 runs win against Marlborough at the Palmerston North sports ground yesterday. Chasing Manawatu’s first ■innings total of 363, after ! scoring 127 runs in their first [innings, Marlborough was all out at 3.02 p.m. for 186 runs. The hero of the day’s play for Manawatu was T. Vaikvee. He made the initial breakthrough before lunch, taking three quick wickets for only five runs, and then continued to bowl well to finish with five wickets for 58 runs. He was not used in the first innings. Marlborough batted well after an early set-back when the first wicket had fallen for one run, and W. Garrod dominated a partnership with S. Lane which was worth 92 runs. But then Vaikvee came in to bowl and the wickets began to tumble. Later P. Rix bowled well for three wickets and with Vaikvee the pahwrecked the Marlborough innings.
