Cyclists Abandon Plans To Tour
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, January 10. The proposed tour of New Caledonia by a five-man New Zealand cycling team has been abandoned, the secretary of the New Zealand Amateur Cycling Association (Mr V. Ross) said today.
Mr Ross said negotiations with the French officials in New Caledonia had broken down.
“The original advice about the trip came to us just on a year ago, when we were told by the New Caledonians that a new track was being opened and that a team of New Zealand riders would be required for the inaugural carnival,” he said. “But since that time we have heard nothing more from them. “In spite of continual efforts by both letters and cables it has been impossible to gain any further information and we have decided to drop the whole project,” Mr Ross said. The national cycling selec-
tors had named a short list of five riders for the tour. They were D. Thomson, of Wellington, R. Johnstone, J. Bigwood and V. Newlove, of Auckland, and the national sprint champion, P. Robinson, of Invercargill.
