EMERGENCY LANDING
Ice Forces Plane Down A light aircraft of the Hokitika Aero Club on a flight from Nelson to Hokitika early yesterday morning was forced to make an emergency landing at Murchison. The pilot and two other occupants of the plane were not hurt when the aircraft after rolling some distance across a paddock, came to rest with its undercarriage in a ditch and its propeller wrapped in a fence. Mr C. Wrait, on whose paddock the plane landed, said he was out milking about 6.10 a.m. when he saw the plane come down low but he lost sight of it behind some trees and did not see it touch down.
“They were very fortunate to stop when they did otherwise they could have tipped right over,” he said.
Mr Wrait said he understood the plane, which was of a French make, had had difficulty with icing while crossing Mount Hope, which lies to the north of his property. The plane had to descend and on breaking out of thick cloud had found Mount Murchison in front of it. It was unable to climb quickly enough and had landed. Mr Wrait said his property lay just north of Mount Murchison.
